Geological Problems Reported
The source map showed an east-west trending fault, part of the Cottage Grove Fault System, in the northern part of the mine, where the coal was down-thrown about 5 feet on the northern side. The coal dipped in all directions from the shaft, with the northeastern workings 48 feet deeper than the bottom of the old shaft. The mine flooded in the spring of 1913, destroying the old shaft and all the mine equipment. The irregular roof contained concretions, and draw slate came down with the coal. The coal displayed occasional slip planes with calcite along them. The floor was a fine clay which tended to heave when wet.
