The gray shale roof was 20 to 30 feet thick and very hard to keep up. Some rolls were present. The coal contained two clay bands, one a blue band Β½ inch thick that had a substantial amount of pyrite, and a lower 3 inch band of clay that was from 3 to 12 inches above the floor. The lower clay band was continuous throughout the mine. Pyrite was also present in lenses 1 to 2 inches thick and 8 to 12 inches across
