Geological Problems Reported

The overburden was not consistent in thickness or extent. In many locations, the shale overburden collapsed into entries of abandoned underground mines. The coal had no shale partings, and pyrite was seen only in small, inconspicuous lenses. However, thick calcite coatings were present on the cleats.
