Geological Problems Reported

An igneous dike was present in this mine that trended due north. The dike was bordered by a small rind of coked coal. The dike was found to coincide with a linear feature on the surface, indicating that the dike seen in the mine may extend to the surface. The roof was good, with very few falls occurring. The floor was a hard claystone that did not cause problems, even when wet. There were some water problems in this mine which required pumping at each face after mining. Some pyrite bands were found throughout the Davis seam, but most commonly the bands were near the top of the Davis seam.

Notes

  1. 3,128 in the Springfield Coal and 1,194 in the Davis Coal. Production indicates an additional 60 acres were mined in the Davis Coal.
  2. A blind slope was used to take the coal up to the Springfield Coal haulage routes, but this slope was not depicted on the source map.
  3. The Davis Coal was mined beginning in July 1996 from a blind slope that descended from the Springfield Coal.
  4. The operators as listed in the Coal Reports may not accurately depict the mine ownership. A. & F Coal Company may have been owned by Tek Bar Industries. Coal Miners, Inc. was a contract mining operation, and the mine was owned by Sugar Camp Coal Company.
