Water came in from the old workings. The gray shale above the soapstone contained large concretions in a 2 foot layer of black shale. The coal contained lenses of pyrite that were commonly Β½ inch by 8 to 10 inches, some up to 4 by 14 inches. The pyrite also occurred in sheets, more in the lower half of the seam, but not limited to any particular part of the bed.
