The coal had an irregular top, with rather frequent broad depressions 5 to 6 feet across and 2 to 3 feet deep. In the center of the pit, a north-south trending trough or syncline interrupted the general flat-lying nature of the seam. The seam was removed in three benches. The top bench was 18 inches thick, and 6 to 8 inches of dirty coal was discarded before mining the middle 6 inch band. The bottom bench was 12 inches thick, and separated from the middle bench by a band of interbedded clay and coal streaks with a good deal of pyrite.
