Mining in the Broadwell Quadrangle

The Turris Coal Company, a subsidiary of Shell Oil Company, opened a mine near Elkhart in 1982 and since that time has mined over 13,000,000 tons from the Springfield coal seam. In 1993 the mine was sold to the Zeigler /Old Ben Coal Company. In 2004 the mine was sold to I. C. G. Illinois and renamed the Viper Mine, and is still an active mine.

The Springfield Coal is the only coal seam mined in this quadrangle. The coal averages 5 to 6 feet thick and ranges from 250 to 350 feet deep.
