One mine was found on an 1876 atlas. The coal mined was generally in thin pod-like deposits, rarely over 2.5 feet thick, that were not continuous over a large area. The coal has been correlated with the Tarter Coal, and at times was thought to be the Gentry Coal (formerly called the Battery Rock Coal.)
