Mining in the Middletown Quadrangle

The two mines that operated in this quadrangle were both underground mines and both opened in 1903. The Middletown Coal Company Mine, just south of the village of Middletown, operated for several years but eventually problems with mining conditions caused it to close in 1911. The Johnson Mine, located south and west of Middletown, found more favorable conditions, although clay veins were encountered. The mine produced almost 691,000 tons of coal and remained active until 1946.

The Springfield Coal in the only seam mined in this quadrangle. The coal averages 5 to 7 feet think and ranges from 180 to 210 feet deep. Some water problems exist in the area and faults and clay dikes or ‘horsebacks’ are common.
