Geological Problems Reported

Numerous faults were reported in all parts of the mine, with displacement ranging from 1 to 15 feet. A normal fault with 10 feet of displacement and adjacent to a large roll resulted in one entry’s abandonment. The roof was “soapstone”, a gray, clay-rich shale, or occasionally a shaly sandstone. Slip planes in the shale were nearly vertical and poorly developed. The shaft was sunk at the bottom of a basin or syncline, making the coal at the shaft nearly 60 feet lower than the surrounding area. The seam was deeper to the north, with a 20- degree incline upslope to the east, west and south. This made drainage easy, but a few years after sinking the shaft, this necessitated making a tunnel to the coal about 50 feet above the shaft bottom to connect with the higher coal. Impurities in the coal included lenses of shale and pyrite in lenses and concretions. Very little calcite was noted at this mine. Coal cleat was poorly developed. Some heaving was reported.
