Geological Problems Reported

One horseback was traced for over 1,000 ft, and consisted of a hard micaceous sandstone. Small faults or slips were noted, as well as horsebacks. The slips made poor roof conditions. The roof was 6 ft of gray shale, full of cleavage planes. The shale was very slabby and laminated and fell in sheets. The coal had a shale parting that thickened northeastward. The parting was more carbonaceous in some areas, but where the parting was more clay-like, the coal was better quality. The parting weathered to a white powder and, when disposed of on the floor of the mine and dampened, became a very sticky mud. Pyrite was present as balls and masses, which were easily separable from the coal.

Notes

  1. Production indicates the Harrison Mine should be approximately 520 to 580 acres. The Harrison Mine is connected underground to mine index 7163 and mine index 7164. While the exact division cannot be discerned from the available source map, an approximate separation between this mine and mine index 7163 and mine index 7164 has been shown on the accompanying map.
  2. Production and years of operation before 1881 are unknown. The 1882 Coal Report indicated that 17 acres were mined.
