Geological Problems Reported

The roof was gray shale up to 18 feet thick; limestone or black shale made up the roof where the gray shale was absent. Generally 1.4 feet of top coal was left to support the roof. The roof was especially difficult to keep up in rooms and entries driven in the north-south direction, due to tectonic stresses. A few rolls were present. The seam occurred as a succession of small folds, with the swags about 7 feet deep. The floor was a soft sandy underclay that heaved badly.

Notes

  1. High extraction retreat was indicated on the 1919 source map in scattered areas throughout the mine.
  2. Idle 1916
  3. The mined area shown on the accompanying map is the approximate size expected for the production reported. This suggests that the mine outline is complete.
