Geological Problems Reported

The roof was black or gray shale. A few slips were present in the roof and coal, which did not affect the mining but required timbering. There were also some veins of pyrite and calcium and gypsum throughout the mine. In some locations the roof was limestone, and the coal was thinner in these locations. The coal was much thicker under gray shale roof, and it held up fairly well, but rolls with coal stringers were present under the gray shale. The normal roof was the black shale. The coal bed was very irregular. “Charcoal” (fusain) lenses and clay partings were present, but not persistent. The coal was fairly clean, with some thin gray shale lenses (rarely ½ inch thick), as well as some pyritic lenses (rarely over ¼ inch thick). The underclay floor was a plastic gray shale that heaved badly. Some rooms became unminable because of heaving.
