Geological Problems Reported

The roof was composed of over 50 feet of gray shale. This shale ranged from massive to laminated, and tended to come down where it was laminated. Heavy timbering was required. Some faults were noted in the seam, as well as some clay bands and lenses. Pyrite bands and lenses were also noted, distributed throughout the seam. The floor clay was hard, but heaved when wet.
