Geological Problems Reported

The Colchester Coal dips to the southwest about 5 feet in 200 feet. The Herrin Coal was all worked out in 1908. The Colchester Coal was worked with the old longwall method, with a full circle of active face. The underclay was mined from under the coal. It was easily softened by wetting and the mined clay was piled along the side of the old workings. The coal was usually wedged down after the clay was removed without the use of powder for blasting. This clay had been used for making bricks. The Colchester Coal contained abundant pyrite lenses up to 1.5 inches thick. The floor heaved a good deal, and was said to be worse if more than 1 foot of clay was removed.
