Geological Problems Reported
The roof was gray shale. The seam contained pyrite in streaks and lenses up to 1 inch thick. After stripping the overburden, the coal was mined as two benches. A layer of “miner’s clod” about 2 inches thick was removed with hand shovels before stripping the lower 20 inches of coal.
