Geological Problems Reported
Clay slips were common in the caprock. This cut the roof into blocks that fell readily and required heavy timbering. The roof changed over to a massive black shale at some distance from the shaft. The shale made a good roof. In some areas of the mine, coal balls were present, but they did not tend to fall. Little timbering was necessary in either the shale roof or the coal ball areas.
