Geological Problems Reported
The roof was a hard shale, which was said to be good for longwall mining under. The mine was noted as being very wet. When the underclay was thick enough, it was mined. The underclay heaved “a good deal”, and ranged from 3 to 6 feet thick.

A switch was added to the Chicago and Alton Railroad for this mine (now shown on the topographic map as the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad).
