Notes
- ↑ The source map was poor and the mine could not be located within the quarter-quarter section. The mine was about 35 by 75 feet, much smaller than our point symbols (about 100 feet), and therefore the mine is shown by an uncertain location point symbol in the vicinity of the mine’s location.
The mine is very small, about 35 ft by 75 ft (disregarding the slope). Our point symbols are about 100 feet diameter, so even if we could digitize it, the slope symbols would completely cover the mine outline.
However, the mine map is poor. The legend says "Mine located in NW 1/4 of NW 1/4 of Sec 25 Twp 33N R2E 3rd PM, La Salle County Illinois" and "map of underground workings of coal mine near Deer Park, Ill." In mine-info, this has been "corrected" to R1E, but that puts the mine right at Oglesby, and it seems illogical that they would be 200 feet from Oglesby and say the mine was near Deer Park (a township name, school, and church - the school and church are in 32n-2e, sections 1 & 2, and a Townhall that must be Deer Park is in se nw sw 2-32n-2e). I see no justification for moving the mine 6 miles west. The map does appear to have what may be a bluff line, but that only works if the north arrow is reversed. There are no lines that work as section or quarter-section lines, so the map can not be placed any closer than the text of the legend (nw nw 25-33n-2e). The map was produced by a mining engineer from measurements provided by Mr. Samolinski, "I do not certify that the given measurements are true and correct", so the engineer was not at the mine and it was not certified, this map is only to satisfy the law about providing a mine map to the various required offices.
All we can do with this map is use the legend to place an uncertain
location point on our map.
