The company name is from the 1886 History of La Salle County, Illinois, Volume I, which also corroborates the 1857 opening year shown on the secondary source map. The year the mine was abandoned was from the source map. The mine name is shown on the source map as Merrick Shaft. The 1876 Complete City Directory of La Salle & Peru indicates the mine at this location was known as the Lower Shaft. Production for mines operating before 1881 is not known.
