Geology
Geological Problems Reported
This mine had three explosions in 1903. The first was gas igniting at a gob fire in the old workings down the south slope (Colchester Coal). The other two explosions were also caused by gas in the old works, and were part of the same event (two and 3 days after the first explosion) before ventilation could be repaired. The interval between the seams was only 6 feet, and a portion of the roof to the lower seam had collapsed, allowing ventilation to give oxygen to feed the fire and the No. 1 hoist shaft burned. The No. 1 Mine was abandoned after this series of explosions.
