Geological Problems Reported

The roof was a limestone caprock for a 40-foot radius from the shaft. This limestone lensed out and the roof over the remainder of the mine was shale. Rolls came up from the bottom and made the coal expensive to mine. Pyrite was present as lenses and stringers throughout the seam, and calcite filled the fractures. The floor was 4 feet of underclay that only heaved when rooms were too wide.
