Geological Problems Reported

Sharp erosional channels filled with sand and gravel, locally called “faults”, apparently halted expansion of this mine in the 1860s. The roof was a black, slightly fissile shale. Above the shale was 2 to 4 feet of limestone.

Notes

  1. Smith re-opened a mine that reputedly operated for a few years in the 1860s.
  2. Mines producing less than 10,000 tons were not reported in 1921. Production for the earlier mining is not known because production was not reported until 1882.
