Geological Problems Reported

The seam was very localized, and was not present ½ mile south or east of this mine. The coal was very dirty (high ash content), and pyrite was present throughout the seam. There was no rock above the seam to make a competent roof, and generally 3 feet of the coal was left to make a roof.

Notes

  1. Some uncertainty exists in the seam correlation. The coal appeared to be a thick lenticular pod of a local seam, called the Schoonmaker Coal in some publications and field notes. The coal was thought to be 20 to 30 feet below the Colchester Coal, and may correlate with the Rock Island or Caseyville Coals, which are known to be lenticular pods in many areas where they occur.
  2. The years of operation are approximate. D. J. Fisher noted in 1923 that former miners in the area stated the mines worked during the Civil War. Production is unknown for any mines operating before the 1881-1882 fiscal year.
  3. The years of operation are approximate. D. J. Fisher noted in 1923 that former miners in the area stated the mines worked during the Civil War. Production is unknown for any mines operating before the 1881-1882 fiscal year.
  4. The mine location was plotted on a 1:24000 USGS topographic map from the mine location description and digitized.
