Mining in the Pleasant Plains Quadrangle
The Springfield Coal was generally 5 to 5.5 feet thick where it was mined in the Pleasant Plains Quadrangle and ranged from 128 to 200 feet deep. Mining took place between 1904 and 1942, with the exception of the Gardner Mine, reputed to have operated circa 1875.
