Mining in the New Windsor Quadrangle

Mining took place in the New Windsor Quadrangle between 1895 and 1973, all working in the Rock Island Coal. The earlier part of Shuler Coal Company’s mine (mine index 0232) was the eastern portion of that mine, which extends into the Woodhull Quadrangle. The most recent mine (mine index 0831, Hazel Dell Mine) closed in 1973, and used drilling to avoid the thinning parts of the podlike deposits of Rock Island Coal.
