Mining in the Beecher City Quadrangle
Mining in the Beecher City Quadrangle began before 1875 and continued through the 1930s, but was confined to very small mines with a limited output for local trade and personal use. Several of the unlocated mines may be included in the “Other mines shown on Beecher City Quadrangle” segment, because so many of those have unknown operators, and some are actually the location of more than one small surface mine pit or more than one drift opening along a valley. The Shelbyville Coal was thin and variable, and was sometimes mined when only 13 inches thick.
