MINING IN THE NEW CITY QUADRANGLE
Mining began here in 1890 with the Peabody No. 5 Mine (mine index 806). This mine closed in 1922 and 29 years later, Peabody No. 10 Mine (mine index 693) opened. Peabody No. 10 operated for over 40 years, and held the record for the world’s largest underground mine for many years.
