The roof contained coal balls and slips (one death was caused by each of these circumstances). The roof of the Springfield Coal was 3 to 4 feet of black shale that seemed bonded to the coal with pyrite. Often 2 to 5 inches of coal were left with the roof. Horsebacks were very common in the Springfield Coal, occurring every 25 to 30 feet. The Springfield Coal contained thin streaks of plate-like pyrite that were difficult to remove from the coal. The Colchester Coal was very hard and pyrite concretions were common. As well, a continuous band of pyrite occurred 4 to 8 inches above the bottom of the seam, along with numerous vertical plates of pyrite and calcite. The floor heaved somewhat.
