The roof was 3 to 12 inches of draw slate under fissile shale. The massive gray shale roof held well and timbering was used for safety. A few small slips occurred in the coal, but did not appear to extend into the roof or to make the roof unstable. The coal contained lenses of carbonaceous shale in the middle of the seam. Pyrite lenses were also found, which were about 3 inches thick and 12 to 14 inches long. The underclay was fairly hard but heaved when wet.
