A normal fault with 15 feet of displacement (downthrown side to the northwest) was encountered 1500 feet east of the shaft bottom. A fault was found in the northeastern part of the mine and this fault allowed water to enter the mine. In some places the roof was limestone, which made for easy mining, but in other areas, the roof was “draw slate”, a gray shale that tended to come down. The top coal was usually left to support the roof. In some areas the roof was black shale that contained concretions. Rolls were present. Pyrite and calcite stringers were present throughout the coal. The floor heaved badly when wet.
