The roof was a hard black shale that stayed up well. Little timbering was required in this mine. In one room, the black shale was only 1/8 inch thick, with limestone above. Concretions were present in the black shale in some areas. Pyrite was present in a clay band and in some of the banded portions of the coal. The blue band was present 16 inches above the floor. The mine was dry.
