A variety of structural features were noted. An asymmetrical syncline, with a steep east flank and a very gentle west flank, was noted in one pit. A bedding plane fault was observed in the Herrin Coal, as well as other shear planes and slickensided surfaces. The Springfield Coal had a zone of reverse faults, with up to 2 feet of displacement. A dark gray shale overlay the Herrin Coal. The Herrin Coal had shale layers up to 1 inch thick, and kaolinite, pyrite and calcite on cleat facings. The Herrin Coal also had local pyrite veins up to Β½ inch thick. The black shale above the Springfield Coal ranged up to 5 feet in places, but varied substantially. Two clay dikes were seen in the Springfield Coal. The Springfield Coal had abundant calcite and pyrite on cleat faces. At least 11 small mines were stripped out in SW 22-T6S-R4W (seven mines) and 26-T6S-R4W, including Carter Mine (mine index 4422), Main Mine (mine index 4423), Glass Mine (mine index 4426) and Quillman Mine (mine index 7269).
