The roof was medium gray to black shale about 1 foot thick. Above the shale was limestone that averaged 3.5 feet thick. In some places the limestone pinched out, or became as thick as 5 feet. The roof was generally good, except in the East Main, where Energy Shale made the roof, and a 4-foot fall was observed. Energy Shale generally occurred in lenses, and sometimes had coal riders on one or more sides. The coal was flat-lying.
