Mining in the Dahlgren Quadrangle
The Opdyke Coal was close to the surface in the Dahlgren Quadrangle, usually less than 40 feet deep. Although the coal was thin, rarely reaching 4 feet thick, it was economic to mine by stripping off the overburden. Mining in the Okdyke Coal ceased in 1979, when the Eads Mine (mine index 0917) closed. Mining in the Herrin Coal began in 2013 with the opening of the White Oak No. 1 Mine, later known as the Hamilton No. 1 Mine (mine index 1052). This mine is a longwall mine.
