Mining in the Lancaster Quadrangle
Most of the mining in the Lancaster Quadrangle took place in the southeastern quarter of the map. The Friendsville Coal was mined, which ranged from 2 to 4 feet thick. The mines were small and operated only a few years before closing. The longest known operating mines both worked 6 years – the Allendale Mine (mine index 878), which operated from 1958 to 1964, and the Keen Mine (mine index 4634), which operated from 1917 to 1923.
