Mining in the Sidell Quadrangle

The Herrin Coal was mined in the Sidell Quadrangle, when the Riola Mine (mine index 1018) extended from the Georgetown Quadrangle on the eastern side. The Energy Shale, a silty gray shale that had layers of siltstone, formed the roof. Mining took place between 1996 and 2006, when the Riola Mine closed.
