Mining in the Todds Mill Quadrangle
The Herrin Coal was mined in the Burning Star No. 2 Mine (mine index 0864), the only mine that extended into the Todds Mill Quadrangle. Energy Shale was present in some areas. This gray sandy gray shale was present as pods or lenses. In most areas, black Anna Shale would have been the roof material over the coal.
The mining took place before 1995. The Herrin Coal was between 200 and 300 feet deep over most of the area, deeper than is usually surface-mined in Illinois. The coal depth is the most likely reason that expansion of Burning Star No. 2 Mine halted without extending further into the quadrangle.
