Mining in the Grayville Quadrangle

The earliest known mining in the Grayville Quadrangle was in Edwards County, where about 100 bushels of “blacksmith coal” was dug out circa 1865 (mine index 7477). The next recorded mine was in 1896, the Bluff Mine (mine index 4655) operated by William Batson in the Friendsville Coal. Most Friendsville Coal mines were shallow, 30 to 70 feet deep, and this resulted in some caved areas in the mine workings that propogated upwards to the surface and allowed water to enter the mine. This situation led to the closure of the Hillcrest Mine (mine index 658).

Most recently, the Springfield Coal was mined from 1973 to 2007. The Springfield Coal is almost 800 feet deep.
