Geological Problems Reported
The roof was usually smooth limestone that was nodular in some places and stayed upwell. However, the source map showed a caved area in the northern part of the mine. The caved area extended upward to the surface and resulted in the mine closure because of water flooding the workings. The coal seam dipped eastward so that the water drained toward the bottom of the slope. The coal was not well-banded, and consisted largely of clarain cannel coal. The lower part of the bed (bottom 8 inches or so) contained bone coal, which was difficult to distinguish from the cannel coal.
