The black shale roof was 2 to 3 ft thick and contained concretions that sometimes extended down into the coal. The concretions were up to 2 ft in diameter. The coal was clean with occasional pyrite bands (up to 1 inch thick) that were irregular and not extensive. A large number of horsebacks were seen, normally 2 to 4 inches across, that often extended through the entire thickness of the coal. The coal was frozen to the fire clay floor.
