A 1907 gas explosion killed a mine examiner. Two northwest-southeast trending faults cut through the mine. These are subsidiary faults of the Cottage Grove Fault System. The main east-west fault of the system limited southern expansion of the mine. The shale roof was generally good, with little timbering needed. Although in isolated parts of the mine, the roof fell easily when the coal was removed. Pyrite lenses were present in the seam. The underclay heaved when wet, causing squeezes in the mine.
