The roof was 3 feet of white top with up to 3 feet of black shale above. A 6 foot limestone cap rock was above the shale. In several places, the limestone had protrusions almost down to the blue band. The coal contained pyrite, charcoal, clay, shale and black jack (hard charcoal) impurities. The blue band varied from 0 to 2 inches thick and was about 6 inches above the floor. The underclay heaved when wet, but the mine was generally dry. The fire clay contained pyrite nodules that made undercutting difficult.
