Mining in the Cadwell Quadrangle
The Herrin Coal was mined at Lovington in one of the deepest mines in the state (900 feet). The coal was very thick, up to 9 feet in many areas, and mining conditions were good, with a stable roof. Mining difficulties were from underclay that was up to 12 feet thick and the resultant squeezes, and gas at the working face. Two fatalities were caused by the methane, but no large explosions occurred.
