Geological Problems Reported

Gas was present at the active face of the workings. The immediate roof was 3 feet of black shale and above that was 8 to 12 feet of limestone cap rock. The black shale had some coal balls 18 inches in diameter or more. The roof was very good and gave very little trouble. The coal contained pyrite in horizontal and vertical streaks and numerous bands of bone coal and dirt. Calcium carbonate was present in the cleats. The coal was separated into three benches. The upper bench was hard and brittle with no conspicuous banding. The middle bench had many pyrite streaks and banded coal. The lower bench was below the blue band and was similar in appearance to the upper bench, hard and brittle. This lower bench ranged from 2 feet thick in the southern part of the mine to 2 inches in the northern part of the mine, where it was not mined but served as the floor. The underclay was12 feet thick. The greatest difficulty in mining came from squeezes in the floor clay, especially when it was wet. Normally, the mine was very dry.
