It opened in 1908 as the Centralia No. 5 Mine, and was later purchased by the Peabody Coal company in 1947. The Herrin Coal was mined here at a depth of 538 feet, and averaged 6.5 feet in thickness. There were some roof problems, but the mine continued operating until 1948. At least one other shaft was attempted her..."
