Irvington Quadrangle
Mining in the Irvington Quadrangle
The Peabody Coal Company No. 21 Mine (mine index 86) was the only mine to have operated in this quadrangle. It opened in 1908 as the Centralia No. 5 Mine, and was later purchased by the Peabody Coal company in 1947. The Herrin Coal was mined here at a depth of 538 feet, and averaged 6.5 feet in thickness. There were some roof problems, but the mine continued operating until 1948.
At least one other shaft was attempted here, circa 1868 (mine index 4249). The shaft was said to have gone over 200 feet deep, but a minable seam of coal was not found.
