Willisville Quadrangle

Mining in the Willisville Quadrangle

Three large surface mines operated within the boundaries of the Willisville Quadrangle: Streamline Mine (mine index 0872), Captain Mine (mine index 0873), and Denmark Mine (formerly Leahy Mine, mine index 0928). These surface mines had large stripping shovels and often mined both the Herrin and Springfield Coals. The Murphysboro Coal was mined near the center of the quadrangle, north of the town of Campbell Hill. These mines had lower production, although two operated for over 20 years: Jackson County Brick Mine (mine index 2475) and Campbell Hill Mine (mine index 0948).
