THE SOUTH PITCH WAS OPENED FOR OVER 1,000 FT. THE MINE IS BELOW THE PERMANENT WATER LEVEL. SKENE WAS FORMERLY A LARGE AND IMPORTANT LEAD MINE. IN 1944, THE USBM DRILL A SERIES OF FIVE HOLES TO SEE IF A DEPOSIT OF LEAD AND EXISTED AT GREATER DEPTH. THESE HOLES CUT MINERALIZED PITH-TYPE FRACTURES, BUT THE LEAD AND ZINC DEPOSITS ARE SMALL AND LEAN. LEAD MINERAL ARE MORE COMMON THAN ZINC.

ECON.COM: SHUT DOWN IN 1907 BECAUSE OF A FALL IN THE PRICE OF LEAD AND THE HIGH COST OF MINING.
