Discussion

IN 1911 AND 1912 MERRY WIDOW WAS THE LARGEST LEAD PRODUCER IN THE UPPER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY AREA.

BOTH THE STEWARTVILLE MASSIVE MEMBER AND THE PROSSER CHERTY MEMBER ARE PARTS OF THE GALENA DOLOMITE. THE ZINC-LEAD ORE IS IN VEINS IN OPPOSITE-DIPPING PITCHES IN THE LOWER PART OF THE STEWARTVILLE MASSIVE MEMBER AND THE UPPER PART OF THE PROSSER CHERTY MEMBER. CROSS FRACTURES EXTENDING SOUTHEASTWARD FROM THE MAIN JOINT CONTAIN PRINCIPALLY ZINC ORE.

OIL IS REPORTED TO LIE AT A DEPTH OF 240 FT BELOW THE COLLAR OF THE TEN STRIKE PUMP SHAFT. THE UPPER MISSISSIPPI VALLEY ZINC-LEAD DISTRICT LIES WITHIN THE SO-CALLED DRIFTLESS AREA WHERE NO MANTLE OF GLACIAL DRIFT IS PRESENT TO OBSCURE THE ROCK EXPOSURES. NATURAL CAVES ARE COMMON IN THE DISTRICT.

THE TWO MINES, MERRY WIDOW AND TEN STRIKE, ARE ADJACENT AND ARE LOCATED ON THE SAME CREVICE.

Name of workings EAST SHAFT
Overall depth 19.81M

Name of workings PUMP SHAFT

THE MERRY WIDOW AND TEN STRIKE MINES ARE CONTROLLED BY THE SAME N 75 E FRACTURE ZONE AND ARE PROBABLY PART OF THE SAME ORE BODY.

ECON.COM: SEVERAL SHALLOW DIGGINS IN THE AREA SHOW THAT OTHER CREVICES ARE MINERALIZED. WILLMAN AND OTHERS (1946, P. 39) THOUGHT THAT OTHER DEPOSITS SIMILAR TO THE MERRY WIDOW COULD BE FOUND AMONG THE CREVICES.
